Yeongmin Pyo is a Research Associate at the Cold Spray Laboratory in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ottawa. He joined this group in 2021 as a graduate research assistant and has since been involved in advanced materials and surface engineering projects. Additionally, he has various experience in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), which support various research activities across the group. Before and during his time in the Cold Spray Laboratory, he also worked as a Visiting Researcher at the Gas Turbine Laboratory in the Aerospace Department of the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) from 2019 to 2024. His work focused on the development of advanced cooling technologies for gas turbine applications. During this time, he received the Best Paper Award: Power (2020) from the Global Power & Propulsion Society (GPPS) in recognition of his research contributions.
His current work focuses on the IDEaS project, which aims to reduce erosion damage on rotary blades using Cr₃C₂-NiCr cermet coatings developed through Cold Spray technology. In this project, he performs sand erosion testing, material characterization, and multi-particle impact simulations. He is also contributing to the HI-AM 2.0 project, supporting Directed Energy Deposition (DED) process development and in-situ quality assurance through characterization. His research supports the development of erosion-resistant coatings and additive manufacturing solutions for part fabrication and repair.
